Mayor Jeff M. Gahan announced that for the first time, the City of New Albany and the New Albany Police Department will conduct a gun buyback program on December 28th at the former Ekin Avenue Recreation Center (1721 Ekin Avenue). The hours of the gun buyback are from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The New Albany Police Department will oversee the safety and security of the gun buyback program. This program applies to residents of New Albany only, and proof of residency will be required before the gun cab be turned over. At no time will your person ID be linked to the gun being turned in. The New Albany Police Department will take all steps to ensure anonymity.
Citizens wishing to turn in an operational handgun, rifle or shotgun (that are not categorized as assault weapons) will receive $200.00 in cash for each firearm. Citizens wishing to turn in an assault weapon will receive $300.00 in cash for each firearm. The Gun Buyback Program will be funded through private donations and money appropriated for quality of life initiatives.
“This is a no-questions-asked program,” stated Police Chief Sherri Knight. “All weapons that are turned in will be destroyed by the Department, and we are also asking that all weapons that citizens wish to turn in are unloaded.”
“Now is a good time to dispose of that extra gun and pick up a few dollars at the same time,” stated Mayor Jeff M. Gahan.
