A Message from Mayor Jeff Gahan
I wanted to take a moment to update you on the status of three of our exciting parks projects around the city.
New Sports Plex
The Silver Street Park and Indoor Sports Complex, located in the old Hoosier Panel industrial site, is quickly moving forward. This exciting parks addition will convert an old industrial site into an urban green-space. The shelter houses, skate park, and most of the children's splash pad area are in place, and work is speeding along on the main 50 yard by 50 yard indoor turfed facility, outdoor walking track, and youth football fields. The main facility will play host to indoor football, soccer, and volleyball, and will also host non-traditional sports and leagues for wiffle ball, frisbee golf, and dodgeball. This park is scheduled to open in late 2014.
New Soccer Fields
The Binford Park Improvement Project is also underway and will convert some of the green-space at the park into youth soccer fields. Over 10 soccer fields are planned, ranging in sizes from Youth 10 fields to Youth 15 fields. These fields will be supplemented with laser graded terrain to improve drainage, intensive repairs and improvements to the park shelter house, and an extensive lighting system to provide a safe atmosphere for families to gather. These improvements are scheduled to be finished by Spring 2015.
New Water Park
Finally, construction on the New Albany Aquatic Recreation Center is fully underway at the location of the old Camille Wright Public Pool. It has been nearly a decade since New Albany has had a public pool, and we are very excited to bring this public amenity back into service. The new park will feature a lazy river, multiple children's splash pads, a large children's activity pool, and numerous body and tube slides for the thrill-seekers among us. This project is scheduled to be completed and open for the next summer season.
We are thrilled to be able to offer these projects and all of the exciting programs in this brochure to help keep New Albany active and busy all season long. I'm sure that if you take a few minutes to browse this brochure, you can find something new to try this fall.
