The purpose of this Citizen Participation Plan is to ensure the timely and accessible involvement of the citizens of New Albany in the drafting, implementation, and assessment of the City of New Albany’s FY2010-2014 Five-Year Consolidated Community Development Plan (“Consolidated Plan”) and FY2010 One-Year Action Plan The Consolidated Plan is a community development plan outlining the City’s needs and goals with regard to affordable housing and homelessness, as well as community and economic development. Mayor Doug England released a statement yesterday regarding the New Albany-Floyd County Consolidated School Corporation’s proposed budget reductions, which included the potential closure of three elementary schools within city limits. Click here to read the entire letter. Mayor Doug England today announced his selection of the nonprofit New Directions Housing Corporation to provide program delivery services for the $6.7 million S. Ellen Jones Neighborhood Stabilization Program, made possible through a recent grant from Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Of the 83 communities and organizations that applied to the state for stabilization funds in March 2009, only 24 were awarded with New Albany receiving one of the largest and most recently awarded grants. New Albany City Government offices will open two hours late — at 10a.m. — Tuesday, Feb. 16 due to weather conditions. Winter weather has again forced the delay of garbage collection by Southern Indiana Waste Systems, New Albany’s contracted waste hauler. The company announced early Monday morning that this week, weather pending, they would be on a one-day delayed schedule for the entire week. The Preston Art Center, located at 315 Pearl Street in downtown New Albany, was featured last week on Kentucky Educational Television’s weekly Louisville Life program. A traffic signal modernization project set to improve six downtown signals at little-to-no cost to local taxpayers began this week, Mayor Doug England announced. The project involves the replacement of existing mast arms, controllers, signal indications for both vehicular and pedestrian traffic and the installation of new vehicle detection at the following intersections: Southern Indiana Waste Systems, New Albany’s contracted waste hauler, is running a one-day delay schedule on weekly sanitation pick up routes, according to Robert Lee, the company’s president. “We had to pull our trucks off the road (Tuesday) due to hazardous conditions caused by the snow and ice,” Lee said. “We always want to practice safety first.” A recent FOX 41 News Business Report featured the growth of New Albany’s downtown district.
